The skin is the body’s largest organ and its main function is to protect against heat, ultra-violet light, infection and injury. The skin also regulates body temperature, provides a waterproof barrier to prevent loss of body fluids, and it responds to five of our six senses. The surface of the skin constantly sheds dead cells, which are renewed every 30 days. Good skin care is important, as unclean skin attracts bacteria, which thrives on sweat and sebaceous gland secretions.
The type of skin you have is determined by the genes which you have inherited from your parents. You may have fair and sensitive skin, or your skin may be dark and unblemished. It is important to know your skin type in order to care for it correctly.
Skin types fall into four categories: dry, oily, sensitive, or an amalgamation of all. Dry skin looks tight is prone to scaling, flaking or itching, and it will soon shows fine wrinkles. With the right care, you can keep dry skin well hydrated.
Treat dry skin carefully by using specialized products designed for this type of skin. Never over-wash dry skin, and avoid oil-stripping soaps and cleansers. Use a nourishing moisturizer and apply frequently. Whenever you go outside wear a sunscreen with a high SP factor, and wear a hat.
If you have inherited oily skin, you will need to clean it with products that have anti-bacterial properties. This will help control the oiliness which causes blackheads and pimples. Wash your skin gently 3 times daily and use an oil-free moisturizer to prevent further breakouts.
Caring for sensitive skin can be difficult unless suitable products are used. Mild, natural and perfume-free products will help stop constant allergic reactions. A gentle approach to cleansing and moisturizing is vital. Consult with a skin specialist if your skin is constantly irritated and itchy.
Combination skin is exactly what it says – a combination of dry and oily skin. Your face will show an oily center on the forehead, nose and chin, with dryness on the cheeks and around the eyes. This type of skin is very common and it should be treated as if it were two different types of skin.
To keep skin healthy, it is recommended that you drink about 7 glasses of water every day. Eat healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, lean protein and fish. The use of certain supplements is also good for the skin. Your skin rejuvenates itself while you sleep, so make sure you get enough quality sleep.
